Home Automation and Monitoring

A service that enables customers to monitor their electricity while controlling their home remotely

Summary

Opower provides tools for utility companies to help customers save power and money. While they already had energy tracking tools on the web, Opower tasked us with making these tools fit the mobile screen while adding the ability to manage their electric bill and remotely control thermostats. Our small team of four conducted user interviews, created personas, developed wireframes, and delivered a high fidelity prototype.

Audience Analysis

I contributed to an audience analysis to create Opower-specific personas. We accomplished this by finding individuals that fall within Opower’s typical demographic. I asked the interviewees about their current and desired utility experiences. After a few interviews, we were able to create a set of personas to help guide us throughout the design process. One of the personas can be seen below.

Wireframes to Prototypes

Following the research phase, our team started out sketching wireframes using Balsamiq. After a few interations with the project stakeholders, we took these wireframes and made pixel perfect mockups in Adobe Illustrator.

The mockups were then turned into a prototype using InVision to put the screens together and make them clickable. We were able to conduct user tests using our prototype. The feedback was used to help us iterate on our designs before delivering them to our stakeholders at Opower.
